This is a beautiful New England Pottery Oyster plate manufactured in 1890. It's a Cobalt Oyster plate with lots of gold around the outer edges and between each well. It has a center sauce well in pale yellow. It is marked on the back with 8 which is the artist mark. It measures 9-1/4' across and has a lot of crazing throughout the plate.

UPW (Union Porcelain Works) was the first company in the United States to manufacture Oyster plates. Located in Greenpoint, NY, they make Oyster plates in 4 well and 6 well kidney shaped Oyster plates as well as round Oyster plates. They come in a variety of colors but this one is magnificent! The background is in soft-white in the wells with loads of seaweed and sea-life between each of the wells. It has 6 wells and a center sause well and is tan along the outer rim trimmed in gold. It's marked on the back with their logo and Pat Feb. 4 79' standing for 1879! Men and women both normally agree on a UPW plate as a standard for a collection! Like all of our Oyster plates, there are no flaws, chips or cracks.
